I grew up understanding the significance of health early on. My mom was diagnosed with multiple autoimmune diseases in her thirties, and has spent half of her life trying to stay well. As my mom switched to chiropractic care for maintaining general health, I learned the difference between maintaining health by treating the source of the problem, versus putting on a big fat bandaid by treating the symptoms. The biggest way for our bodies to fight illnesses and function normally is to give it what it needs, and allow its own immune system to do its job. It’s the classic, what you eat is what you get.
While traveling is awesome, you’re often exposing your body to new viruses and bacteria, putting it through a whirlwind of health tests. I’ve maintained my health by consistently eating my fruits and vegetables, using homeopathic remedies to boost my immune system rather than replace it, and being active.
Now we all have our weaknesses. For example, my mom and I are major sugar addicts. So I’ve learned how to make sweets that are actually healthy. (As long as you don’t make them your main food group.) I’ve found its really fun experimenting with different recipes and actually knowing what exactly I’m putting in my mouth.
Wellness goes beyond what you put in your body. What we put in our environment directly affects us. Plastics have created a mess for the health of our environment, of the animals that inhabit the earth, and of our own bodily functions. Plastics carry toxins and flood our earth without any hope of disappearing. We live in a world that thrives on consumerism, but this unfortunately leads to mass landfills that infiltrate toxins into our earth. Do we really want to live in a plastic-ruled, trash-filled world? I’ve recently switched into a zero waste lifestyle, which is a difficult journey, but an empowering one. Part of wellness is creating a lifestyle that minimizes plastic, and even minimizes any kind of single-use waste. This is for the benefit of our bodies, which are affected by the harmful synthetic chemicals of plastics, for the benefit our our land and oceans, and for the benefit of future generations.
